A. Through my career, I've observed a massive shift in the perception of photography from the practical use. 

In the early days of my photography which was predominantly utilitarian. 

It was about capturing moments, freezing a memory in a frame. 

However, as digital cameras rolled out and the images began to take artistic priority, photography evolved into an expressive form of storytelling.

 

Q. What distinguishes photo artists from traditional photographers in your view?

 

A. Photo artists have a uniquely different mindset and mission. 

While traditional photographers focus on technical accuracy and faithful representation, photo artists prioritize the end result, which might include a heavy dose of creative expression. 

It's about telling a story, evoking emotions, and creating a visual experience that goes beyond what the camera is capable of seeing. 

Photo artists are more willing to experiment and push the limits of all tools available to convey their end vision in a unique way.

 

Q. How has the digital revolution impacted the way photographers approach their work?

 

A. The digital revolution was the absolute game-changer. 

Look at what happened to Kodak, in Rochester NY, near my hometown of Canandaigua. 

By not embracing digital imaging, they became extinct.

There is no way that film could have competed with digital speed to Market advantages.

Once image quality caught up, the inherent qualities of digital were insurmountable:

• Instantaneous storage and review.
• Fast transport of finished images over great distances.
• Flexibility and vast selection of post production tools.

Not to mention that today’s green market demands sustainability, which chemically produced and processed film would never have survived. 

Think about the environmental impact of having eradicated the film industry. 

Aside from the environmental impacts alleviated by digital photography, the range of creative freedom is exponentially greater and in the world of art,  creativity is always going to be paramount.

Now with AI onstage, more barriers are removed and the imaging universe is further being redefined once again.

I’m excited for the obvious and somewhat scary possibilities.

 

Q. Do you think the distinction between traditional photography and photo art is becoming more blurred?

 

A. Ultimately the viewer decides what is relevant. In today's world of traditional photography, photo art in AI image generators competing for attention, distinctions aren't blurred …they’re completely redefined. 

The accessibility of digital tools has leveled the creative process, allowing photographers to experiment with styles and techniques that were once reserved for a select few. 

As a result, the distinction between the three has become completely open, paving the way for a more eclectic and dynamic photographic universe.

 

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring photographers looking to explore the realm of photo art?

 

A. Let the infinite boundaries of your imagination govern what's possible. Your photo art is about creating your unique vision with whatever tools are available…this now includes AI.

Learn the technical aspects of photography, but also invest time in understanding the history of the medium and exploring the work of renowned photo artists. 

Find your voice and let your creativity guide you. And remember, there's no right or wrong in art— it's about conveying your message and connecting with your audience.
